Frequently Asked Questions

Why are you doing this?

Living in Los Angeles during the 1992 Riots left an impact on me as a kid. Things are scary when they get out-of-control. Now, as a Psychiatrist, I have learned a great deal about how music can affect the body, mind, and spirit. I want to support everyone through this project, whether a demonstrator or in law enforcement. I just want everyone to stay safe.

📍 Can I participate if I don't live in Los Angeles?

Absolutely. While this project began in LA, it is designed to be replicated in any city. If your area experiences protests or unrest, you're welcome to join and help Keep The City Calm through peaceful sound.

🪪 Will my name be associated with this? I want to be anonymous.

You do not need to share your name. You can fill out the form anonymously.

🎷 Why would I participate?

If you care about your neighborhood, this is a peaceful, non-confrontational way to help reduce tension. Playing calming jazz can help create a more relaxed public atmosphere—and contribute to a broader social experiment in crowd psychology.

♪ Do I have to use the "Sweet Jazz" playlist? I want to use my own.

You can use any soothing playlist you like, it could be jazz, classical, Enya's Greatest Hits...

📝 Will my name be used in a publication?

Only if you want it to be. We may attempt to publish our findings in a journal or article. If you consent and include your name when reporting, we’ll be happy to credit you (otherwise, all submissions are anonymous).

⚖️ Is playing music in public legal?

In most cities, playing music at a moderate volume from private property (like your window or balcony) is not illegal. However, if the volume becomes disruptive, local noise ordinances may apply. We recommend using a reasonable volume—loud enough to hear from the street, but not disturb neighbors.

📡 How will results be measured?

Participants will fill out brief surveys before and after playing music. We’ll also review public crime and disturbance data in areas where jazz was played. While informal, this will help us understand if the intervention correlates with reduced incidents.

đź’° Is this a nonprofit project?

No, this is not a registered nonprofit organization. However, donations are welcome to help offset hosting and data collection costs associated with running and expanding the project.
